His debut film Enclosure was entered into the 2nd Moscow International Film Festival where he won the Silver Prize for Best Director. Two years later, his film El Otro Cristóbal was entered into the 1963 Cannes Film Festival.

The son of a colonel in the Swiss Guards, he was elected a member of the Académie française in 1652 aged 16 and a half. He died young and his seat was then held by his two sons, Pierre and Henri-Charles.
