He inherited the titles Earl of Carlisle, Viscount Howard of Morpeth, Baron Dacre of Gillesland and Lord Ruthven of Freeland, in 1994 upon the death of his father, Charles Howard, 12th Earl of Carlisle. A member of the Howard family and a kinsman of the Duke of Norfolk, he is also a co-heir to the baronies of Greystock and Clifford.

She is best remembered as a regular panelist on the television game show To Tell the Truth. She served 20 years on the New York State Council on the Arts. In 1991, she received the National Medal of Arts from President George H. W. Bush. She was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 1999.
