She became an Assistant United States Attorney in 1974, and was first appointed to the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey by President Ronald Reagan in 1983. In 1999, she was appointed to the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, by President Bill Clinton.

Named one of the 50 Greatest Players in history by the NBA in 1996, Barry ranks among the most prolific scorers and all-around players in basketball history and is the only one to lead the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), ABA, and NBA in points per game in a season. His 36.3 points per game are the most in the NBA Finals history, and he is the all-time leading scorer in ABA history. Barry also is the only player to reach the 50-point mark in a Game 7 of the playoffs in either league. He is one of only four players to be a part of a championship team in both leagues.

Barry not only improved conditions for wounded soldiers, but also the conditions of the native inhabitants, and performed the first recorded caesarean section by a European in Africa in which both the mother and child survived the operation.
