List of Famous people who died in 1956

Lyonel Charles Feininger was a German-American painter, and a leading exponent of Expressionism. He also worked as a caricaturist and comic strip artist. He was born and grew up in New York City, traveling to Germany at 16 to study and perfect his art. He started his career as a cartoonist in 1894 and met with much success in this area. He was also a commercial caricaturist for 20 years for magazines and newspapers in the USA and Germany. At the age of 36, he started to work as a fine artist. He also produced a large body of photographic works between 1928 and the mid 1950s, but he kept these primarily within his circle of friends. He was also a pianist and composer, with several piano compositions and fugues for organ extant.

Jean Gehret was an actor and director, appearing in a few films directed by Jean Renoir, including La Chienne (1931) and Madame Bovary (1933).

Antonio Gelabert Amengual was a Spanish professional road bicycle racer. He became Spanish national champion in 1950 and 1955.

George Bancroft was an American film actor, whose career spanned more than thirty years from 1925 to 1956. He was cast in many notable films alongside major film stars throughout his Hollywood years.

John Campbell Boot, 2nd Baron Trent, KBE, was the son of the Sir Jesse Boot who turned the Boots Company, founded by his father John Boot, into a major national company. He was educated at The Leys School and Jesus College, Cambridge, and served in the First World War. In 1914 he married Margaret Pyman and had four daughters.
