Janez Janež was a Slovene medical doctor and surgeon who worked for most of his life in mainland China and Taiwan. In Chinese he is known as Fan Fenglong or simply Doctor Fan.

Yang Huimin was a Girl Guide during the 1937 Battle of Shanghai who supplied a Republic of China flag and brought supplies to besieged defenders of the Sihang Warehouse. Her actions proved inspiring to the defenders, who flew the flag the next daybreak in front of thousands of watching eyes across the bank of the Suzhou Creek.

Characteristically humble, she insisted in interviews on being called a cook rather than a chef. A contest for the top soup-kitchen chefs is named after her.
