John Thomas Wilder was an officer in the Union Army during the American Civil War, noted principally for capturing the key mountain pass of Hoover's Gap during the Tullahoma Campaign in Central Tennessee in June 1863. Wilder had personally ensured that his "Lightning Brigade" of mounted infantry was equipped with the new Spencer repeating rifle, though he initially had to appeal to his men to pay for these weapons themselves, before the government agreed to carry the cost. The victory at Hoover's Gap was attributed largely to Wilder's persistence in procuring the new rifles, which totally disoriented the enemy.

William Vogel Bidwill was an American businessman and the owner of the Arizona Cardinals of the National Football League (NFL). He had co-owned the team from 1962 for ten seasons with his brother Charles Jr. and had been sole owner from 1972 until his death in 2019.

Nassir Shamai Little is an American professional basketball player for the Portland Trail Blazers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Little finished his high school career as one of the top-ranked players in his class, having led Orlando Christian Prep to consecutive Florida state championships. Thomas James Kurvers was an American professional ice hockey defenseman who later served as the assistant general manager for the Minnesota Wild of the National Hockey League (NHL). Kurvers spent 11 seasons in the NHL between 1984 and 1995. He was the 1984 Hobey Baker award recipient as the best collegiate ice hockey player and was a member of the Stanley Cup-winning Montreal Canadiens in 1986. He was the interim general manager for the Tampa Bay Lightning during the 2009–10 season. Kurvers was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, but grew up in Bloomington, Minnesota.

Henry Lewis Benning was a general in the Confederate States Army. He also was a lawyer, legislator, and judge on the Georgia Supreme Court. He commanded the "Benning's Brigade" during the American Civil War. Following the Confederacy's defeat at the end of the war, he returned to his native Georgia, where he lived out the rest of his life. Fort Benning is named after him.

Joy Harjo is an American poet, musician, playwright, and author. She is the incumbent United States Poet Laureate, the first Native American to hold that honor. She is an important figure in the second wave of the literary Native American Renaissance of the late 20th century.
