His name rose to prominence in public debate in the context of the Me Too movement, as several sexual abuse accusations were put forward by women who interacted with him throughout his career. In the aftermath of these events, Roemer moved to Israel to escape public scrutiny, where he was again accused of sexual misconduct. On 5 May 2021, an arrest warrant for the felony of rape was issued by the Attorney General of Mexico.
