Maxime Rodinson was a French Marxist historian, sociologist and orientalist. He was the son of a Russian-Polish clothing trader and his wife, who both died in the Auschwitz concentration camp. After studying oriental languages, he became a professor of Ethiopian (Ge'ez) at EPHE. He was the author of a body of work, including the book Muhammad, a biography of the prophet of Islam.

He has been mayor of La Rochelle from April 1999 to April 2014, president of the Agglomeration community of La Rochelle from January 2000 to April 2014 and an MP of the Charente-Maritime's 1st constituency from April 1999 until June 2012.
