János Kornai was a Hungarian economist noted for his analysis and criticism of the command economies of Eastern European communist states. He also covered macroeconomic aspects in countries undergoing post-Soviet transition. He was emeritus professor at both Harvard University and Corvinus University of Budapest. Kornai was known to have coined the term shortage economy to reflect perpetual shortages of goods in the centrally-planned command economies of the Eastern Bloc.

János Áder is a Hungarian politician and lawyer who has been the President of Hungary since 10 May 2012. Previously he served as the Speaker of the National Assembly of Hungary from 1998 to 2002 and Deputy Chairman of the European Parliament Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety from January to May 2012.

János Gróz was a Hungarian handball and beach handball coach. He was one of the most successful trainers in Hungary in the beach version of the sport.

Count János Eszterházy was a prominent ethnic Hungarian politician in inter-war Czechoslovakia and later in the First Slovak Republic. He was a member of the Czechoslovak Parliament and of the Slovak Assembly. After the Second World War, he was illegally deported to the Soviet Union, sentenced on trumped-up charges at a show trial, and imprisoned. In the meantime he was sentenced, in absentia, to death by the National Court in Bratislava on the charges of High Treason to the State, collaboration with enemy, the breaking-up of Czechoslovakia, and his participation in an anti-democratic regime as a deputy of the Slovak Assembly. The sentence was not executed as a consequence of a Presidential pardon, following his return to Czechoslovakia from Soviet Union. He died in prison in 1957.

János György Szilágyi was a Hungarian historian who was a specialist in ancient drama and Greek art. He was born in Budapest. In 2011 he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Republic of Hungary. He died at the age of 97 in 2016.

János Kádár was a Hungarian communist leader and the General Secretary of the Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party, presiding over the country from 1956 until his retirement in 1988. His 32-year term as General Secretary covered most of the period the People's Republic of Hungary existed. Due to Kádár's age, declining health and declining political mastery, he retired as General Secretary of the party in 1988 and a younger generation consisting mostly of reformers took over.

János Szentágothai FRS was a Kossuth Prize-winning Hungarian anatomist, Professor, Member of Parliament, and President of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Anthony G. doctor and grandson of Alexander Lumniczer, great-grandson of a doctor. The general assembly of UNESCO decided the year 2012 to be dedicated to honour the 100th birthday of János Szentágothai.

Count János Zichy de Zich et Vásonkeő was a Hungarian politician, who served as Minister of Religion and Education between 1910–1913 and in 1918. He was a member of the House of Magnates from 1894. He was the chairman of the Catholic People's Party for many years, but he resigned in 1903. He joined the Constitution Party in 1906. When the party collapsed, he became a member of the Party of National Work.

János Szász is a Hungarian film director, screenwriter and theater director. He has directed eleven films since 1983. His film Witman fiúk was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival and was entered into the 20th Moscow International Film Festival. His 2007 film Opium: Diary of a Madwoman was entered into the 29th Moscow International Film Festival.

János Kende is a Hungarian cinematographer. He has worked on more than 60 films since 1967. He was a member of the jury at the 27th Moscow International Film Festival.
