John Edmund Sharrock Moore ARCS was an English biologist, best known for being co-publisher of the term meiosis and leading two expeditions to Tanganyika.

Fritz Oliven, also known as Rideamus was a German lawyer and writer who was born in Breslau and died in 1956 in Porto Alegre, Brazil. Under the pseudonym Rideamus, Oliven went from being a lawyer to a successful author. As a lyricist, librettist and revue composer, he worked with Oscar Straus, Walter Kollo and Eduard Künneke and wrote for the great hall revues. Some of these works include the operetta The Cousin from Nowhere and the revue Noch und Noch. As a Jew, he decided to immigrate to Brazil in 1939. In 1951, the autobiography Rideamus, From He Himself, The Story of a Jovial Life was published.

Willie Person Mangum was a U.S. Senator from the state of North Carolina between 1831 and 1836 and between 1840 and 1853. He was one of the founders and leading members of the Whig party, and was a candidate for president in 1836 as part of the unsuccessful Whig strategy to defeat Martin Van Buren by running four candidates with local appeal in different regions of the country. He is, as of 2021, the only major-party presidential nominee to have been a North Carolinian at the time of his nomination.

He was also the uncle of the man who married Betsy Griscom in 1773, giving her her famous married name: Betsy Ross. In 1952, he, George Washington, and Robert Morris appeared on a three-cent stamp commemorating Betsy Ross.
