He played at Sampdoria's primavera (youth) team with Kurniawan Dwi Yulianto and Bima Sakti but not like his other former teammates, Kurnia succeeded to break into the first team and become the fourth choice goalkeeper for one season during the Sven-Göran Eriksson's era. At one time when Sampdoria's first choice goalkeeper Fabrizio Ferron is red carded, Sampdoria attempted to promote Sandy into the first team as a back up for Matteo Sereni, but apparently his management have yet to process Sandy's permit related papers. Thus Sampdoria entry was denied by the FIGC.
