Keïta founded the centre-left political party Rally for Mali (RPM) in 2001. After a number of unsuccessful campaigns, he was elected president in the 2013 presidential election and reelected in 2018. He resigned on 19 August 2020, after being taken captive by mutinous elements of the Malian Armed Forces.
