Johnston also collaborated with Terry Melcher, as the duo Bruce & Terry and with the surf band the Rip Chords, and composed the 1975 Barry Manilow hit, "I Write the Songs".

He has served in the Illinois House since 1971, representing the 22nd District from 1971 to 1983, the 30th district from 1983 to 1993, and currently represents the 22nd district since 1993. This makes him the body's longest-serving member and the only legislator elected before the Cutback Amendment.
