In 2012, Blakely was named in Time magazine's "Time 100" annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world. She was listed as the 93rd most powerful woman in the world by Forbes.

George Michael Zimmerman is an American who fatally shot Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Florida, on February 26, 2012. On July 13, 2013, he was acquitted of all charges in Florida v. George Zimmerman. After his acquittal, Zimmerman himself was the target of a shooting, which resulted in a conviction for attempted murder against the perpetrator.
