He was Secretary of State for Transport for the Minister of Ecology, Sustainable development, Transport and Housing in the François Fillon III government, and a member of The Republicans, until joining the National Rally's list for the European election in January 2019.

Angelo Mariani or Ange-François Mariani was a French chemist and entrepreneur from the island of Corsica. He is best known as the inventor of the first cocawine, Vin Mariani, in 1863. His contribution was to introduce the coca leaf indirectly to the general public. Mariani imported tons of coca leaves and used an extract from them in many products. It was Mariani's coca wine, though, that made him rich and famous. Mariani was also awarded with a medal of appreciation from Pope Leo XIII. This tonic wine has been described as the ancestor of Coca-Cola.

Carlo Maria Mariani is an Italian painter. His paintings are rooted both in neoclassicist theory and modernism. In the 1970s he defended his choice of medium from attacks by art critics by making parallels between the melancholy for the past of neoclassicism and the then trendy conceptual art. He received international attention in the 1980s with what was called pittura colta and la Nuova Maniera in Italy, in which he employed old subjects and styles.
