Alexandru Nicolescu was a Romanian bishop of the Greek-Catholic Church. Born in Tulgheș, Harghita County, Transylvania, he studied at the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples in Rome from 1898 to 1904, earning a doctorate in Philosophy and Theology. Returning to Blaj, he was sent as a missionary priest to North America. Once back in Transylvania, he taught of moral theology at the Blaj Theological Seminary.

George (Georges) Minne was a Belgian artist and sculptor famous for his idealized depictions of man's inner spiritual conflicts, including the "Kneeling Youth" sculpture series. A contemporary of Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele, Minne's work shows many similarities in both form and subject matter to the Viennese Secessionists, the fathers of Art Nouveau.

Granville Edward Bromley-Martin was an English first-class cricketer: right-handed batsman and occasional right-arm slow bowler who played for Oxford University and Worcestershire around the turn of the 20th century.

Nevada Stoody Hayes, sometimes called Nevada of Braganza, was an American socialite who became the wife of Infante Afonso of Braganza, Duke of Porto, whose nephew, Manuel II, was the last king of Portugal. She was the Princess Royal of Portugal, but never accepted as a member of the exiled Portuguese royal family, yet by Portuguese law her marriage to Afonso was legal.

Henry St John Stirling Woollcombe was the inaugural Bishop of Whitby from 1923 until 1939; and also of Selby. Born into a clerical family, he was educated at Clifton College and Keble College, Oxford before being ordained in 1895. After a curacy in Stepney he became head of the Oxford House University Settlement in nearby Bethnal Green. A brief spell as chaplain to Cosmo Gordon Lang was followed by a decade as the parish priest of Armley. Promotion to be the Sub Dean of Diocese of Coventry in 1922 was swiftly followed by elevation to the episcopate. After 16 years at Whitby he made a sideways move to become Bishop of Selby- a post he held only for 18 months. His Times obituary noted his capacity for "getting on with and getting the best out of all conditions of men.

Emanuel Lasker was a German chess player, mathematician, and philosopher who was World Chess Champion for 27 years, from 1894 to 1921, the longest reign of any officially recognised World Chess Champion in history. In his prime, Lasker was one of the most dominant champions, and he is still generally regarded as one of the strongest players in history.

Walther Hermann Nernst ForMemRS was a German chemist known for his work in thermodynamics, physical chemistry, electrochemistry, and solid state physics. His formulation of the Nernst heat theorem helped pave the way for the third law of thermodynamics, for which he won the 1920 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. He is also known for developing the Nernst equation in 1887.
