He was formally part of the coaching set-up for the successful Crusaders side between 2005 and 2006, before getting an 8-year stint in France with Clermont Auvergne between 2006 and 2014. He is a former International head coach, having coached the Scottish national team, but left his role in May 2017 after it was announced in August 2016 that his contract was not extended by the Scottish Rugby Union. In January 2020 Cotter was appointed as coach of the Fiji national side.
