He held the WBA heavyweight title twice, from 2007 to 2009 and from 2014 to 2016, and was the first Asian boxer to win a world heavyweight title by any of the four major sanctioning bodies. As of December 2020, BoxRec ranks Chagaev as the 10th greatest Asian fighter of all time, pound-for-pound. He was ranked as the world's top 10 heavyweight by BoxRec from 2004 to 2011, reaching his career-high ranking of No.3 in 2005, 2006 and 2007.
