Grunewald was the national champion in the 3000 meters at the 2014 USA Indoor Track and Field Championships.

After retiring from the FBI, he authored a number of books on serial murders, and often gave lectures on criminology.

Appointed to the VRC in 2014, she is currently the scientific lead of the VRC's Coronavirus Team, with research efforts aimed at propelling novel coronavirus vaccines, including a COVID-19 vaccine.
