Lucas won the Academy Award for Best Film Editing in 1977 for Star Wars, which was written and directed by her first husband, George Lucas. She was nominated for an Academy Award for her film editing on American Graffiti and for a BATFA Award for best editing on Taxi Driver. After a career gap while raising her family, Lucas produced two films in the 1990s.

He turned professional following the 1988 season. He returned to competition in 1993 and competed at the 1994 Winter Olympics, where he placed sixth.
