Stefan Banach
Stefan Banach was a Polish mathematician who is generally considered one of the world's most important and influential 20th-century mathematicians. He was the founder of modern functional analysis, and an original member of the Lwów School of Mathematics. His major work was the 1932 book, Théorie des opérations linéaires, the first monograph on the general theory of functional analysis.
Janusz Waluś
Janusz Jakub Waluś is a Polish convicted murderer. He previously held dual Polish-South African citizenship from 1986 until his South African citizenship was revoked in 2017.
Jerzy Bielecki
Jerzy Bielecki was a Polish Catholic social worker, best known as one of the few inmates of the Auschwitz concentration camp who managed to escape successfully. With the help of other resistance members in the camp, he escaped in 1944 together with his Jewish girlfriend, who was an inmate of Auschwitz II. In 1985 Bielecki received the Righteous Among the Nations award. He also co-founded and headed the postwar Christian Association of the Auschwitz Families.
Mordechai Gebirtig
Mordechai Gebirtig, born Mordecai Bertig, was an influential Yiddish poet and songwriter of the interwar period. He was shot by Germans in the Kraków Ghetto, occupied Poland, during the Holocaust. A number of his Yiddish songs are still sung to this day, including Es brent, Reyzele, Moyshele Mayn Fraynd, and Kinder Yorn.
