A member of the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party, he has been chairman of the House Committee on Agriculture since 2019, previously holding the office from 2007 to 2011; he had been ranking member from 2011 to 2019 and 2005 to 2007. Peterson was the most senior U.S. Representative from Minnesota and the dean of Minnesota's congressional delegation.
