The body of Elisa Lam, also known by her Cantonese name, Lam Ho Yi, a Canadian student at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, was recovered from a water tank atop the Cecil Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles—at which she had been staying preceding her death—on February 19, 2013. She had been reported missing at the beginning of the month. A maintenance worker at the hotel discovered the body when investigating guest complaints of problems with the water supply and water pressure.

J. Miles Dale (born 1961) is a Canadian producer and director of film and television, best known for producing the critically acclaimed film, The Shape of Water, for which he won the Academy Award for Best Picture at the 90th Academy Awards. He is a regular collaborator of director Guillermo del Toro.

He played CIAU men's volleyball for the Calgary Dinosaurs before transferring to play for the Manitoba Bisons with whom he won a national championship while being named the tournament's most valuable player. He competed in the men's tournament at the 1984 Summer Olympics where the Canadian team finished in fourth place.
