In 2007, he signed to indie record label Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE), where he eventually formed West Coast hip hop group Black Hippy alongside West Coast rappers Jay Rock, Kendrick Lamar and Schoolboy Q. He is perhaps best known for his introspective lyrics and his four independent albums under TDE, Longterm Mentality, Control System, These Days..., and Do What Thou Wilt., which were all released to positive reviews and commercial success.

Derick Brassard is a Canadian professional ice hockey centre currently playing for the Arizona Coyotes of the National Hockey League (NHL). Brassard has previously played in the NHL for the Columbus Blue Jackets, New York Rangers, Ottawa Senators, Pittsburgh Penguins, Florida Panthers, Colorado Avalanche and New York Islanders. He was selected in the first round, sixth overall, in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft by the Blue Jackets.
