Martin has dealt with Catholic sex abuse cases in his tenure as Archbishop. On 29 December 2020 Pope Francis accepted Martin's resignation as Archbishop of Dublin and appointed his successor. The former Bishop of Ossory Dermot Farrell was installed as Martin's successor on 2 February 2021.
