Jules de Polignac, 1st Duke of Polignac was a French nobleman and the husband of Yolande de Polastron, a confidante of Queen Marie Antoinette. He became the first Duke of Polignac in 1780. He died at the age of seventy one in Little Russia, where he was given a manor by Catherine the Great.

He became somewhat famous for being fairly conformist early in his career but later in life he made more emotional and less widely known art. His experiences during World War I shaped the rest of his life and artistic career. He was awarded the Légion d'honneur in 1912.

Paul Jules Barbier was a French poet, writer and opera librettist who often wrote in collaboration with Michel Carré. He was a noted Parisian bon vivant and man of letters.
