He played college football at Northwestern State University of Louisiana and was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in the sixth round of the 2012 NFL Draft. He became a member of the Legion of Boom, and was part of Seattle's Super Bowl XLVIII-winning team over the Denver Broncos.

In 2012, Spencer was named Golden God's "Best Drummer" by Revolver Magazine, and was voted "Best Drummer of 2015" by Loudwire. He was also voted "Best Drummer" at the 5th Annual Loudwire Music Awards. His book Dirty Wars: The World Is a Battlefield was published by Nation Books on April 23, 2013. On June 8, 2013, the documentary film of the same name, produced, narrated and co-written by Scahill, was released. It premiered at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival.
