One of her first notable television roles was in Another World as Dawn "Ivy" Rollo, the first HIV-positive character to be introduced in a daytime soap opera in the United States. She was credited as Barbara Bush in her early roles.

She is also known for playing Leanna Love on the television series The Young and the Restless for which she was nominated for a Soap Opera Digest Award for Outstanding Villainess in a Drama Series – Daytime in 1990.
