After his acquittal, Zimmerman himself was the target of a shooting, which resulted in a conviction for attempted murder against the perpetrator.

Due to his small stature, Valbuena is nicknamed le petit vélo, which translates to "the little bike". This is a play on Valbuena's size and the fact that the home ground of Marseille, where he played for eight years, is called the Stade Vélodrome.
