Joseph Arthur Ankrah was a General of the army of Ghana who served as the 2nd President of Ghana from 1966 to 1969 in the position of Chairman of the National Liberation Council. Before becoming the Head of State, Ankrah served as the first commander of the Ghana Army.

After retiring from competitions he became a coach and sports official, appointed as Secretary of State for Youth and Sports in 1991–1993 and President of the Romanian Handball Federation in 1997–2014.
