For his performance in American Horror Story: Hotel as Liz Taylor, O'Hare received critical acclaim.

In 2017, he was nominated by President Donald Trump to be a United States District Judge of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia, but his nomination was withdrawn after receiving criticism for his poor performance during his confirmation hearing. On August 26, 2019, Petersen announced his resignation from the FEC, effective August 31. No reason was given for the resignation.
