Earlier, he held the post from 2002 to 2008, during which he also served two terms as President of the United Nations Security Council. On 23 July 2020, Munir Akram was elected President of the United Nations Economic and Social Council.

While at Oregon, he was nicknamed "Mr. March" for his clutch play during the NCAA tournament. He is also a member of the senior Greek national team.
