List of Famous people born in Romania

Alice Voinescu (1885–1961) was a Romanian writer, essayist, university professor, theatre critic and translator. She was the first Romanian woman to become a Doctor of Philosophy, which she did at the Sorbonne in 1913 in Paris. In 1922, she became a professor of theatrical history at what would become the Royal Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts in Bucharest, where she taught for over two decades. In 1948, she was removed from her department and spent a year and seven months in prisons in Jilava and Ghencea. After her detention, she was kept under house arrest in the village of Costești near Târgu Frumos until 1954. Posthumously, her diary covering the interwar and communist period of Romania's history was discovered and published in 1997.

Lucien Goldmann was a French philosopher and sociologist of Jewish-Romanian origin. A professor at the EHESS in Paris, he was a Marxist theorist. His wife was sociologist Annie Goldmann.

Alexandru Athanasiu is a Romanian politician and jurist. A former leader of the Romanian Social Democratic Party (PSDR), he is a member of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) since 2001. Athanasiu served as Prime Minister on an interim basis from 13 December to 22 December 1999, heading the Romanian Democratic Convention (CDR) cabinet after the resignation of Radu Vasile. On 1 January 2007, with the accession of Romania to the European Union, Athanasiu became a Member of the European Parliament for the PSD.

Gilles Ségal was a French actor, mime, and playwright. He performed on stage with Marcel Marceau, and in more than sixty films since 1954. He was born in Fălticeni, Romania. Among his most notable roles is that of one of the heist participants in Jules Dassin's Topkapi.

Vincențiu Babeș was an ethnic Romanian lawyer, teacher, journalist and politician from Hungary, and one of the founding members of the Romanian Academy.

Maria Marinela Mazilu is a Romanian skeleton racer on the Skeleton World Cup circuit. She began competing in 2002 and was selected to the national team in 2004. She was the bronze medalist at the Junior World Championships at Igls in 2012 and again at Winterberg in 2014. Mazilu qualified for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver where she finished 19th, and for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi where she finished 20th.

Alexandru Mesian is a Romanian bishop of the Greek-Catholic Church. Born in Ferneziu, now part of Baia Mare city, he graduated from Gheorghe Şincai High School. Admitted to the Roman Catholic Theological Institute of Iași in 1957, Mesian was expelled on the orders of the communist authorities the same year, as he was from a family that belonged to the banned Greek-Catholic Church. He performed his military service from 1957 to 1960, working as a technician in Baia Mare from 1950 to 1990. Mesian studied theology and was ordained a priest in secret in 1965, emerging into the open in 1990, after the fall of the regime. In 1994, he was consecrated auxiliary bishop for the Lugoj Eparchy, advancing to bishop in 1996 with the retirement of Ioan Ploscaru.
