Rupp competed for the University of Oregon and trained under Alberto Salazar as a member of the Nike Oregon Project. He won the 2017 Chicago Marathon, the first American to do so since Khalid Khannouchi in 2002. Rupp won the US Olympic trials in Atlanta on February 29, 2020, in a time of 2:09:20, qualifying for the Tokyo Olympic Games.
