Kim Jong-il's father, Kim Il-sung, handpicked her to marry his son. The two had been estranged for some years before his death. Kim Young-sook had a daughter from this marriage, Kim Sol-song. She was First Lady of North Korea from 8 July 1994 to 17 December 2011, when her husband died.

She is the Curtis and Kathleen Marble Professor of Astrophysics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where she is also the Dean of the university's School of Science. She was previously the Associate Head of the university's Department of Physics She was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship in 2010.
