At the 10th Berlin International Film Festival, she won the Silver Bear for Best Actress for her role in the film The Fair. From 1964–68 she was the partner of the Italian actor Vittorio Gassman with whom she had a son, Alessandro, an actor too.

Born in Tokyo, she holds a BA in international relations from the University of Tokyo, and an MPhil in economics from Yale University, where she became a member of President's Council on International Activities. Currently, she is a Professor at the Meiji Institute for Global Affairs in Tokyo.
