Between 1958 and 1989 she was a member of the Central Committee of the ruling SED (party) in the German Democratic Republic, where she was also director of the Berlin based Academy for Social Sciences.

While better known for his interest in new music, he was also devoted to music of baroque and classical eras; he founded the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, institute for early music, in 1933.
