He was descended from Atherton Mather (1663–1734), a cousin of Cotton Mather. His early work dealt with the stability of smooth mappings between smooth manifolds of dimensions n and p. He determined the precise dimensions (n,p) for which smooth mappings are stable with respect to smooth equivalence by diffeomorphisms of the source and target.

John Patrick Shanley is an American playwright, screenwriter, and director. His play, Doubt: A Parable, won the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the 2005 Tony Award for Best Play. He won the 1988 Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for the film Moonstruck. He also went on to direct the films Doubt in 2008 and Wild Mountain Thyme in 2020.

John Pemberton Plumptre was a British politician. He was elected as a Conservative Member of Parliament for East Kent in 1832, and resigned on 29 January 1852 through appointment as Steward of the Chiltern Hundreds. He was educated at St John's College, Cambridge.
