Donough O'Brien, 2nd Earl of Thomond, also known as "the fat", was the son of Connor O'Brien, King of Thomond and Annabell Burke. He inherited the earldom from his uncle, Murrough O'Brien, by special remainder.

Sir Donough MacCarty, 1st Earl of Clancarty (1594–1665), named Viscount Muskerry from 1641 to 1658, was an Irish magnate, soldier, and politician. He demanded religious freedom as a Catholic and defended the rights of the Gaelic nobility, trying to play the rebel and the royalist at the same time.

Donough [Donagh] MacCarthy, 4th Earl of Clancarty (1668–1734) fought for James II at the Siege of Derry. His peerage was attainted in 1691 after the defeat. MacCarthy went into exile to the Netherlands, where he lived for some time on the tiny island of Rottumeroog, and in Germany near Hamburg where he died.

Donough Edward Foster O'Brien, 16th Baron Inchiquin was an Irish peer and 29th indirect descendant of Brian Boru.
