He served as the Confederate Register of the Treasury during the American Civil War. Previously, Tyler served as private secretary for his father's presidential administration. In later life, he served as the editor of the Montgomery Advertiser. His wife Priscilla Cooper Tyler served in place of the First Lady of the United States from September 10, 1842, to June 26, 1844, between the death of her mother-in-law and President Tyler's remarriage.

Tyler also composed the 2013–2016 Marvel Studios logo which debuted with Thor: The Dark World (2013), the NFL Sunday Countdown Theme for ESPN, the Formula One theme, and five installments of the Fast & Furious franchise. For his work as a film composer, he has won the IFMCA Awards 2014 Composer of the Year.

Elizabeth Priscilla Cooper Tyler was the daughter-in-law of John Tyler, the tenth President of the United States. She served as official White House hostess and First Lady of the United States from September 10, 1842 to June 26, 1844.
