Walter Breuning was an American supercentenarian who was the oldest recognized living man in the world between July 18, 2009 and his death. As of 2021, Breuning was the third-oldest verified American man ever, behind Danish-born Christian Mortensen and Mathew Beard, as well as the second-oldest man ever born in the United States. At the time of his death, he was the fourth-oldest verified man ever; as of 2021, he is the fifth-oldest.

Helene von Breuning was a member of the Bonn upper class, who engaged Ludwig van Beethoven to teach music to her children, gave him education and introduced him into social circles. Due to the close ties, she was later referred to as his "second mother" because she favourably shaped his early career.
