Kenji Nakagami was a Japanese novelist and essayist. He is well known as the first, and so far the only, post-war Japanese writer to identify himself publicly as a Burakumin, a member of one of Japan’s long-suffering outcaste groups. His works depict the intense life-experiences of men and women struggling to survive in a Burakumin community in western Japan. His most celebrated novels include “Misaki”, which won the Akutagawa Prize in 1976, and “Karekinada”, which won both the Mainichi and Geijutsu Literary Prizes in 1977.

Tokitsunada Hironori was a sumo wrestler from Waki, Tokushima, Japan. He made his professional debut in March 1985, and reached the top division in May 1992. His highest rank was maegashira 4. He retired in September 1999 and remained in the Sumo Association as jun-toshiyori. He had to leave the Sumo Association in September 2001, having failed to acquire a permanent toshiyori. He was the first jun-toshiyori wrestler to be forced to leave sumo in this way. However he later worked in a private capacity as a coach at Arashio stable. He also ran a chanko restaurant named Tokitsunada in Tokyo.

Irwin Fridovich was an American biochemist who, together with his graduate student Joe M. McCord, discovered the enzymatic activity of copper-zinc superoxide dismutase (SOD),—to protect organisms from the toxic effects of superoxide free radicals formed as a byproduct of normal oxygen metabolism. Subsequently, Fridovich's research group also discovered the manganese-containing and the iron-containing SODs from E coli and the mitochondrial MnSOD (SOD2), now known to be an essential mammalian protein. He spent the rest of his career studying the biochemical mechanisms of SOD and of biological superoxide toxicity, using bacteria as model systems. Fridovich was also Professor Emeritus of Biochemistry at Duke University.
