In the Minneapolis City Council election, 2017, Cunningham won over 20-year incumbent Barb Johnson by 157 votes. Cunningham identifies as black, queer, and transgender.

Renold Vatubua Quinlan is an Australian professional boxer of Indigenous and Fijian descent. Best known for knocking out former world champion Daniel Geale, Quinlan held the IBO super-middleweight title from 2016 to 2017.

He played college football for the University of Alabama, and was recognized as a consensus All-American.
