Charles William Bachman III was an American computer scientist, who spent his entire career as an industrial researcher, developer, and manager rather than in academia. He was particularly known for his work in the early development of database management systems. His techniques of layered architecture include his namesake Bachman diagrams.

Alphons Egli was a Swiss politician and member of the Swiss Federal Council (1983–86). He was elected to the Federal Council of Switzerland on 8 December 1982 and handed over office on 31 December 1986. He was affiliated to the Christian Democratic People's Party of Switzerland. During his time in office he held the Federal Department of Home Affairs and was President of the Confederation in 1986. Egli was a citizen of Entlebuch and Lucerne. He died on 5 August 2016, aged 91.

Yuri Fyodorovich Orlov was a particle accelerator physicist, human rights activist, Soviet dissident, founder of the Moscow Helsinki Group, a founding member of the Soviet Amnesty International group, and Professor of Physics at Cornell University. He was declared a prisoner of conscience while serving nine years in prison and internal exile for monitoring the Helsinki human rights accords as a founder of the human rights movement in the Soviet Union.

Makhmud Alisultanovich Esambayev was a Soviet and Chechen actor and dancer. Makhmud was regarded as one of the most famous dancers of the Soviet Union.

Erika "Riki" Mahringer was an Austrian alpine skier who competed in the 1948 and 1952 Winter Olympics. In 1948 she won the bronze medal in the slalom event as well as in the Alpine combined competition. In the downhill contest she finished 19th. Four years later she finished fourth in the 1952 Olympic downhill event. In the same year she finished 17th in the giant slalom competition and 22nd in the slalom contest.

William Howard Gass was an American novelist, short story writer, essayist, critic, and philosophy professor. He wrote three novels, three collections of short stories, a collection of novellas, and seven volumes of essays, three of which have won National Book Critics Circle Award prizes and one of which, A Temple of Texts (2006), won the Truman Capote Award for Literary Criticism. His 1995 novel The Tunnel received the American Book Award. His 2013 novel Middle C won the 2015 William Dean Howells Medal.

Paul Hébert, OC, CQ was a French Canadian television and stage actor and director, and the founder of six theatres in Quebec. He is best known for his role as Siméon Desrosiers in Le Temps d’une paix, a Canadian soap opera.
