Her novel Spinning Silver won the American Library Association's Alex Award in 2019, the 2019 Locus Award for Best Fantasy Novel, and the 2019 Audie Award for Fantasy. Spinning Silver was a 2019 Hugo Award for Best Novel Nominee, a 2018 finalist for the Nebula Award for Best Novel, and a 2019 Goodreads Choice Award Nominee for Fantasy. Other novels by Novik were nominated for the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 2007, 2016, and 2019.

Jahana Flemming Hayes is an American educator and politician serving as the U.S. Representative for Connecticut's 5th congressional district since 2019. The district, once represented by U.S. Senator Chris Murphy, comprises much of northern Fairfield County and northwestern Connecticut, including New Britain, Danbury and Waterbury. A member of the Democratic Party, Hayes is the first African-American woman and African-American Democrat to represent Connecticut in Congress. She was recognized as the National Teacher of the Year in 2016.
