Petra Thümer is a former swimmer from East Germany. She won gold medals in the 400 m and 800 m freestyle at the 1976 Summer Olympics and the 1977 European Aquatics Championships. During her career she set five world records in the 400 m and 800 m freestyle. In 1987 she was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame.

Petra Wenzel is a Liechtenstein former alpine skier who competed in the 1980 Winter Olympics and 1984 Winter Olympics. She is the sister of Hanni Wenzel and Andreas Wenzel.

Petra Burka is a Canadian former competitive figure skater and now coach. She won the 1964 Olympic bronze medal in women's figure skating and the 1965 World championship in the sport.

Petra Schwille is a German professor and a researcher in the area of biophysics. Since 2011, she has been a director of the Department of Cellular and Molecular Biophysics at the Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry in Martinsried, Germany. She is known for her ground-laying work in the field of fluorescence cross-correlation spectroscopy, and numerous contributions on model membranes. Her current research focuses around bottom-up approaches to building an artificial cell within a broader area of synthetic biology. In 2010, Petra received the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize.

Petra Overzier is a German professional badminton player. She is the first player originally from Germany to medal at the World Championships in women's singles category in 2006. Her younger sister Birgit Overzier is also a professional badminton player.
