He was a member of the Surrey side that won the County Championship in 1971, and also played for Western Province in South Africa in 1971–72, and for Rhodesia between 1972–73 and 1979–80.

He is the current American record holder in the 50-meter and 100-meter breaststroke, and the 200-meter breaststroke.
