He is best known for winning the 2013 UCI Road World Championships in Tuscany, Italy – the first Portuguese rider to do so –, three stages of the Tour de France in 2011 and 2013, and the 2012, 2013 and 2014 editions of the Tour de Suisse, becoming the first cyclist to win the event for three consecutive years.
