His work became well known when a short NatGeo news report featured him for the decontamination process of the small lake El Cascajo in Chancay, Peru, where he grew up as a child, using what he terms as "bubble nanotechnology." He had done research about this process. However, he had never tried it before. His father contacted him when he heard that there were plans to cover it, due to the fact it was contaminated. The recently graduated Morikawa made the decision to travel to his childhood home and decontaminate it himself. Many residents warned him that the lake was so contaminated that he'd get sick, but he paid no heed to their words. The process to decontaminate the lake took him 15 days. Because of his efforts, more than 70 species of birds and fish returned to the area. The residents have also started efforts to take care of the lake.
