He played high school basketball at Benedictine High School in Richmond, Virginia. He is the son of former NBA player Terry Davis, who played 10 seasons (1989–2001) with the Miami Heat, Dallas Mavericks, Washington Wizards and Denver Nuggets. He was selected with the 13th overall pick in the 2010 NBA draft by the Toronto Raptors.

He was drafted as a strong safety by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft, where he played for two and a half seasons before being traded to the St. Louis Rams in 2014, where he moved to the linebacker position. He also played for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Denver Broncos.
